Roman Discoveries at the Norris Museum

Over the past week, our Year 4 pupils visited our local museum on The Broadway to help bring their Roman topic to life.

The children explored a variety of Roman brooches and made their own, looked at artefacts and handled real Roman pots, played a Roman board game and even got to try on some Roman-style clothes.

The Norris Museum is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and admission is free. Visit their website for more details.

Coffee Morning

Westfield parents and carers tucked in to some generous donations of cake whilst enjoying a coffee to help raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support after our Harvest assembly last week.

Staff, parents and children brought in their delicious bakes on the morning of Friday 3rd October, and during morning breaktime, parents got to enjoy the delicious bakes with a cup of tea or coffee.

A total of £121 in donations were collected on the day. Further donations can still be made here.

Macmillan Cancer Support is a charity close to many staff, parents and friends of the Westfield Junior School community and we are proud to support them every year. Further information and support from Macmillan can be found here.

Supporting our local Foodbank

In our harvest assembly last week, as we thought about the food we are able to gather in this time of year, Westfield pupils donated food items for St Ives Food Bank, to be distributed to local families.

St Ives Foodbank delivers food parcels to families in St Ives and the surrounding villages of Bluntisham, Colne, Earith, Fen Drayton, Fenstanton, The Hemingfords, Needingworth, Pidley, Somersham and Wyton-on-the-Hill.

Further information about St Ives Foodbank, run by All Saints Parish Church, can be found on their website: St Ives Foodbank – All Saints Parish Church

A Summer of Reading

Over 30 Westfield pupils attended the Summer Reading Challenge award ceremony this week at St Ives Library.

Town Mayor Julie Kerr presented children who had read at least 6 books over the summer holidays with a certificate and medal.

After completing each book, the children visited the library to share what they enjoyed about the book they had finished reading and to collect a sticker for their reading challenge collector card.

The Mayor told all the children if they wanted to be Mayor one day, they had to be really good at reading to read through pages of never ending meeting agendas.

Cambridgeshire Libraries held activities throughout the summer to accompany the challenge.

The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every summer at libraries across the country, organised by the charity The Reading Agency, who have a misson to inspire social and personal change through the power of reading.

Summer Reading Challenge

It’s still not too late to register for the summer reading challenge at St Ives Library.

Just pop along to the library any time during staffed hours to register and collect your reading challenge sticker collector card. You’ll get a new sticker for each book you read. If you read 6 books over the summer you’ll complete the challenge and be invited to the award ceremony in September.

Every time you complete a book, pop in to the library to share the story you’ve read. If you visit between 10am and 12noon on a weekday, you might even meet some of our lovely former Westfield pupils volunteering for the reading challenge, ready to hear about your book. Library staff are available during all other library opening hours.

If you complete the challenge, be sure to share news of your success with your new teacher in September!

New Website Launch!

This summer we are updating our website to be simpler and more concise. Hopefully it will be easier to find those essential bits of news or upcoming dates with a simpler menu structure and clearer, less cluttered layout.

Eventually, the new website should be easier to update with news from our learning journey across the whole school, keeping the community informed of developments here at Westfield. As it links directly into our pupil learning platform, our students can be directly involved in sharing news from Westfield in the near future.

Please bear with us as we get used to using and updating the new site!
